Tour turns sour

By now all are well aware of the situation that occured on the fields while the Indian cricket team was on a test match series tour to the Aussie land. It all started with Australia’s last visit to India, in which posters were made by the spectators with offensive words towards Andrew Symmonds. Now, months later, on Sunday, the third day of the second test…we all saw (i did too!) a chit chat happening between Harbhajan Singh and Symmonds which instantly lead to Ricky Ponting complaining about it to the umpires. Apparently, Harbhajan had repeated the offensed words and Symmonds took offense (ofcourse!).

Now neither you or i know the complete truth…but on the accounts of Australian players’ testimony Harbhajan has been suspended from the next three test matches…if this wasn’t a real sour experince for the Indian on the aussie fields…to make matters worse there were some unfair umpiring, where two of the players were given out at the wrong moment…resulting in India’s defeat (not that India’s chances are ever bright against Australia…but its still wrong umpiring, and the BCCI are taking action against it). I’m still willing to let go of the wrong judgement, it happens…but with todays technology and advancement…when Steve Buckner wasn’t sure of what the decision should be, he walks over to the other umpire Mark Benson to discuss what they should do. Now as any sensible umpire would do, signal for third umpires (i mean what are these third umpires doing anyways with a TV..put them to some use..make their penny’s worth), instead Buckner looks for Ponting who signals and out and thus Buckner gives an out. Is this what umpires are doing now…i personally do not feel that Benson or Buckner in particular were worthy umpires.

Following all this, chaos has occured in both country’s media regarding what truly happened and what should have. Now Symmonds is unavaiable for comment or rather has been forced to be unvailable is still a question…still the question arises that are aussie really playing to win or are playing to humilate (ownself in this case!).

Sure australia has a lead of 2-0 in the series…but is this victory a truly deserved one or than a stolen one. Aussies have been the masters of cricket for a long time, and without a doubt have the best line of batsmen, finest bowlers and a spectalur fielders, but the point still remins, do they have the sportsman spirit. There have been numerous accounts of players being harassed by the opponent team especially if it happens to be South Asian.

We have stepped into 2008 and we proudly say that today the world is diverse, but where is diversity when it comes to play. A sport should be taken in its spirit and such things are the part and parcel of any game. When Aussies decide to slam a player which their remarks, they should be fully prepared to get a whole lot in return, especially if its us Indians. We weren’t the weak kinds 60 years ago and were certainly not weak today.
